With the amazing response on the first post, I just had to keep going on with the series. My original intent behind this was rather simple, with the advent of these "InStAgRaM iNfLuEnCeRs" promoting any random shit for the sake of views/money, the original places of Allahabad which held the charm intact for years, are now getting foreshadowed. At least through this way, we can share it with our peers and hopefully make others aware of the amazing eateries this city offers.
For Post 2, I went a little unconventional, and bring forth a streetside vendor.
Venue: Churmura wale bhaiya at Bishop Johnson Girl's Wing (That's what we used to call him for years)
Location: Katra, next to the entrance of Bishop Johnson Girl' s Wing
Best Time to Eat: Lunch Hours to 5 PM
Recommendation: Bhelpuri (spicy)
The Deets
One thing which is very peculiar about this city, is that the food items available here are so exclusive at times, you won't even find them in neighbouring cities, let alone different states/countries. Churmura happens to be one of them. For those of you who don't do, churmura is puffed rice mixed with spices, sour chutney, peas, peanuts, bhujiya etc., and is served in the iconic paper cone roll. Its a fun thing to snack on, and used to be our go-to thing at school primarily because of how cheap it was. The original churmura wala at Indira Bhawan (Softy Corner) got famous for this particular reason. I was surprised when I went to other cities and people didn't know that something like this exists lol.
Anyhow, for those of us who went to school in this city, everyone knows the importance churmura and bhelpuri held during lunch breaks and when school got over. While every school had their own "dedicated" churmura wala xD, the folks at Bishop Johnson Girl's Wing were lucky, because they did in fact, had THE BEST churmura wala (in my opinion). I remember back in the day, we used to get churmura for Rs. 2/- and Bhelpuri for Rs. 5/-.
This man here, has been manning this stall from as early as 2008 (because that's how far in my memory I can remember him), and is one of those lucky few who still have maintained their tastes and standards. The guy prepares things in a clean and hygienic manner, and what's lovely about him is the fact that he pays attention to detail. He makes sure that there is a certain amount of roasted peanuts on top of your bhelpuri every time, there is a little papdi, the right amount of chutney, and he prepares it so meticulously, you'll fall in love with the taste of it every time. The spices he adds, the chillies, the tangy and sweet chutney, the culmination of flavours just explode in your mouth with every bite you have.
Obviously with passing time his prices have also gone up, but it still remains an iconic place, and a hidden gem in plain sight. If ever crossing around that place, it is a 10/10 recommendation to visit that man and give it a try.
The Shortcomings
- Can get crowded at times (when exams happen)
- The price might seem high for someone who is still used to having 10 rupaye ka "laai chana"
Rating: The man holds a tight 9/10 recommendation on my part. If I missed something out or you disagree on something, please feel free to add your comments.
Until next time. :)
