A PSA about Mech.
Post Body

Disclaimer: I believe Mech needs to be buffed, but I am aware that many of you do not. That is not directly what I am here to talk about today, so for the purpose of this post, whether or not you agree with it, lets assume Mech needs to be buffed. I am here instead, to calm some of the hysteria that people seem to have at the idea of Mech being viable, and Turtle-Mech making a comeback. Thank you to anyone who responds in advance! glhf! :)

To begin, I want to make it clear, that when you see a Terran player saying they want Mech back, they do NOT mean Raven-Mech. That strategy was hated by 99% of the player base for a reason. Nobody, not even Mech players want that back in the game. So when you see a person say they want Mech to be viable, before you respond, "Mech should not be viable! It's turtling is bad for the game!" I want you to stop, and say to yourself: "This fellow likely does not mean the horror that most of us think of as Mech, I will hear him out before breaking out the pitchforks!"

That out of the way, I will try to make it clear why you should no longer fear the idea of Mech.

Turtle-Mech is no longer possible. The Raven, the maps, the ability to slowly take bases, have all changed. The Ravager and the Disruptor are both great at breaking down Siege Tank lines, and the Viper and Ultra are both much stronger. Protoss players have been teching to Tempest in TvP anyway, and the Adept is fantastic at getting past defenses and forcing the Terran out of position. Not to mention that the general design and style of LOTV do not support it either.

I know what you are thinking: "I see what you are saying, Mister, but Mech players will still turtle! It's just the way Mech playes!" Will some idiots still sit on three bases with 150 supply of Siege Tanks behind a wall of turrets? Sure. But after they have achieved this unbreakable defense, what then? In the old days, you could turtle on 3/4 bases and mass Ravens. It was almost impossible to break the Terran on the ground, and once he reached a critical mass of Ravens, there literally wasn't an army comp in the game that beat SiegeTank/Raven. Now, you mine out on those 3/4 bases by 15 minutes and you longer have the Raven to mass. We no longer have a unit to turtle to. They will literally have zero chance of winning now, and instead just draw the game out. That's bad, I know, but is it really that bad? Have we forgotten what it's like to win a long, drawn out game? It feels freaking amazing! Those games where every base is taken and you've been maxed out about 10 times, built every unit, and it feels like it could go either way at the drop of a hat, are literally the best things ever. The feeling after winning one of those. You know the one. And to answer my own question, no, we have not forgotten about games like that because we see them anyway! How many non-cheese games have you seen where the Zerg didn't get Ultras or Broods? Very few. Games go long anyway, TvZ especially because Zergs want Hive Tech. And Protoss wants HTs and Tempests. All of those units are GREAT at breaking turtle Terrans! And we see them rushed almost every game anyway! If late-game armies are being rushed anyway, how much could a stupid Terran trying to turtle really slow down the game? Why wouldn't he just push? And if the idea of having to deal with a stupid, turtling Terran (who you have the tools to defeat), some of the time, in 1/3 of your matchups is enough to make you try and condemn a race to having only one play style, you don't deserve to be a part of this wonderful game. We deal with Zergs turtling to Hive almost every game and you don't see us trying to get Hive Tech removed. I know that's a really warped way of looking at it, but no more and many people's view of Mech.

So now, lets say we got a few targeted buff, and have a new style of Mech that focuses more on Siege, and less on defense. We have aggressive strats like Cyclone/Mine. Where Cyclones menace bases/units and then pulled back behind Widow Mine fields when they are threatened themselves. Or Siege Tank/Lib slow push styles, or Cyclone/Hellion base/worker sniping strats.

"But," I'm sure you must be thinking, "if you say Mech won't be the turtle-fest it was before if it got some buffs, why then, did the Terran I just play on ladder turtle with Mech? Won't buffs just make that worse?" The reason Mech turtles now, is because its core units don't fill their jobs well. Mech can't be aggressive or try to innovate because if they leave their base, they straight up die. And if you're worried that if you can't break a turtle Terran now, how will you with buffs? Well, if you can't now, and you can't with buffs, whats changed? Other than the fact that the Terran no longer has the Raven transition to actually try and win with, nothing! Now the the Raven is gone, if Mech doesn't need to turtle, it won't.

No. When you see people talk about Mech, stop and listen. I believe the diversity it will bring is something you want. The awesome pro games it will bring is something you want. The Turtle-Mech you know cannot ever make a comeback.

The should/What/Why of buffing Mech is not something I am trying to address in this post. I am targeting the people the people specifically who(of which there seems to be many) say they don't want Mech in this game purely because they don't like the idea of turtling. To those people I say, "there is nothing to fear! You stand only to gain!"

TLDR: Turtle Mech is dead, and is not what we are asking for when we want Mech buffs.

edit: Just a side note. I consider the reason of "cuz turtle-mech is cancer!" that people give when they state they do not want Mech to be a thing to be none valid for the reasons I give in the post. And is what I am hoping to eliminate. If you have some other reason for not wanting it, that is perfectly valid and not something I am attacking in this post. I am, frankly, not a good enough player to tackle that side of the debate, so I won't insult you by trying.
