A man accused of fatally shooting an elderly man at a Best Buy in Santa Fe and robbing an Albuquerque bank in recent weeks was arrested in Las Cruces on Saturday.
Zachary Ryan Babitz, 38, of Edgewood, was charged in Santa Fe with an open count of murder, robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm, following the fatal shooting in Santa Fe last week.
According to the Las Cruces Police Department, Babitz still faces several felony charges for incidents in the city that are under investigation.
Babitz, arrested Saturday, is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
"The city of Santa Fe and other communities in New Mexico affected by Mr. Babitz's actions can breathe a little easier today," Santa Fe Police Capt. Thomas Grundler said during a Zoom press conference Sunday afternoon.
At about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Babitz was with an unidentified woman in an Arby's when he pointed a firearm at an employee and demanded money, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.
Police said after the two left, they forced a woman out of her Chevrolet Impala at gunpoint before they later crashed the car and fled. The woman was not injured.
LCPD said Babitz was found near the crash site. The woman he was with remains on the loose.
Police are asking that anyone with information on the woman call 575-526-0795.
Las Cruces is the third community Babitz is accused of committing a crime in during the last couple of weeks.
In Albuquerque, Babitz is charged with armed robbery and tampering with evidence after his July 31 robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank in the Northeast Heights.
According to Santa Fe police: a week later on the morning of Aug. 6, Babitz fatally shot Gordon Peter Wilson, 83, in a Best Buy parking lot there and then stole Wilson's Jeep.
Albuquerque police found the vehicle abandoned outside Babitz’s friend's apartment in Southeast Albuquerque, according to court records. The friend told police that Babitz said he shot Wilson when the man grabbed his gun.
Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber said in a statement Sunday he was thankful for Babitz's arrest.
"I’m grateful to the Santa Fe Police Department, the Las Cruces Police Department and the other law enforcement agencies that worked together to mount a swift and effective hunt for the suspect in the brutal murder of Gordon Wilson," Webber said.
"Nothing will bring Gordon Wilson back, and our hearts go out to his family and friends. But the apprehension of this suspect brings us closer to justice and healing.”
