Apologies if this is a repeated question โ€” please fully explain ranked choice to me

Post Body

I am currently out of state attending graduate school and a friend from Alaska is visiting me. We each submitted our ballots for this election with two different strategies.

I voted only for Peltola, because I understood that my second and third choices would possibly be ranked/assigned to a candidate I didnโ€™t want. I would rather those two candidates not receive any votes from me.

My friend voted for Peltola and then the other two candidates in an order that seemed less evil to her. She was under the impression that, if she did not give a number to the 2nd and 3rd candidates on the list then it would give those two candidates an edge.

How in the world is this actually working out? We both read different sources and donโ€™t know which is correct.

Please help us.
