Hi All -
Alan Watts's idea of "you are the universe" -- that I am the heart pumping my blood, the lungs, the stars shining, etc. -- and that I am not just the consciousness in between my eyes -- does this not run counter to Eckhart's "you are consciousness"? Can both of these perspectives be correct? The way that I see it, Eckhart is in line with the classic psychedelic realizations that "I am not my mind" and "I am not my body", both of which seem to run counter to Watts's main idea.
My opinion is the following: I am consciousness. I inhabit a body, but I am not essentially the body. The reason why I believe I am consciousness is because I am not a form object -- I am formless. I do not exist in the world of form as an object, but rather, I emerge from it through different forms, such as the human being, whom I "embody".
I would love to hear others' thoughts on this matter. Thanks for reading.
