Contractor CAC

Since contractor CACs are issued on specific contracts, if that contract is terminated for some reason, does the CAC expire immediately? Or is the contract just used to issue it and it will expire on the dated expiration printed on the card itself? Not sure if the CAC and contract are tied together or not.
