Hoping for advice for what to do to avoid any additional penalties or costs associated with this stay. I booked a 34 day stay with a host back in April in good faith. This qualifies as a long term stay and did get a discounted rate.
Midway through my stay, a situation arose at home, and I need to leave ASAP. I communicated immediately with the host and they were very understanding, and we've arranged key drop-off with no issue for early departure. I have made it very clear that I AM NOT REQUESTING ANY TYPE OF REFUND. The cancellation policy is also clear that a refund will not be available and I am not asking for any type of exceptions. This is my own issue and it is a sunk cost.
However the host has asked that I modify the dates of my stay within Airbnb. That is the part that is making me a bit nervous. Checking out 10 days early would remove the rate for the long-term stay and weirdly I think staying only 24 days costs a bit more than staying the entire 34.
I think I have 3 options.
- Not modify or cancel. Keep the property blocked for my original stay but drop the keys off. This feels unkind to the host who might as well re-rent the place if they can.
- Modify the Dates. Allow them to clean and re-rent but take the risk that this puts the rates at a higher cost and I get charged extra? Is this possible?
- I think there is also an option to just cancel? Same as the above outcome but not sure what that does to the pricing/paperwork side of it.
I am really just trying to avoid paying more than I already have and I know a safe way to do that is to keep the host blocked but I really don't want to do that to them.
Any recommendations or reassurances besides just trusting the host? Thank you!
