Can anyone explain the benefit/purpose of the TRS?

If everyone that puts their tokens into the TRS contract almost immediately gets more than they put in; there is no restriction on supply. It seems to me the only purpose is to punish investors that don't by diluting their holdings. Does it serve any technical or economic purpose?
