My parents (both mid-80s) live in a 100 year old house, with lots of stairs, low handrails, and so on. Dad had a mild stroke which has really affected his cognitive ability and mom has a condition that makes her physically weak. They have always been active, but age and health issues are taking their toll. So the house is ridiculously unsafe. My siblings and I want them to move, but they absolutely refuse to do so, and because they're both competent right now we can't force them. Dad is one of the most hard headed people I know. Last summer we had a meeting and I laid out in plain terms my fears-of them falling down the stairs and dying, etc. It went nowhere.
So our fallback position is to try and convince them to make the house safer. I am thinking handrails in the bath/shower, chair lift for the stairs, and so on. I also know they will be more receptive to suggestions from a third party as opposed to from my siblings and me. I am sure there are consultants who will make recommendations for the house, but I don't know where to start looking for one. Any ideas?
I appreciate the offer, but I am fairly certain they won't be receptive to a video consult. They are going to insist on someone walking the house with them.
My parents live in Birmingham, AL. UAB Medical Center is there, and they think anything coming out of UAB is the gospel truth/gold standard. If I can get an OT or PT affiliated with UAB, my parents will listen to them.
This is about family dynamics more than anything, unfortunately. They won't listen to the "kids" (we are all in our 50s and 60s, but still kids in their eyes), but they will listen to someone from UAB. They're stubborn.

All great ideas. With the family dynamics they won't listen to us kids-they are going to have to hear it from an "expert."
