I heard of small men living in the mountain, were they born from stone?
Post Body

Exploding from a rock stood a man, short and clad in a beard. He had come to be from a dream far away and so much he knew. He gazed up towards the heavens and thanked his heavenly god for life. The first named himself Snrub Stonebeard. And from his birth he ventured forth knocking on other boulders and just like that another opened to bring forth yet another. Soon they were fourteen of them. All short, stout bearded men and beautiful (to them) women. Often no shorter than 20 cm but up to nearly 40 cm they were indeed dwarfed by all and everything. But they quickly adapted to their environment and made tools from stone and wood and pottery from clay downstream – the Véttír culture was born. They lived on the land hunting great beasts and building settlements in trees of in natural shelters where no beast could attack them, or where they could perhaps tame a beast itself. This was different from the others who ventured uphill and towards the mountains – sturdier and somewhat taller kin who built their homes inside mountains or on mountain walls. This culture although the same was more proficient in stone working even at its most primitive stage and they were led by Snrub Stonebeard who told stories of them being born from a dream of the great worldstone above. This religious mountain dwellers became known as the Mountain Véttír Culture. As the cultures developed there were several distinct subcultures to be found, the Landvéttír, Zeevéttír, Mountainvéttír, Tuntrevéttír and Helmvéttír.

The two main cultures coexisted as kin who benefited from trading and mixing with each other, yet their distinct cultures developed in different directions. The more religious mountain dwellers soon learning of higher forces, praying and erecting altars where some became proficient in warping the world (magic) to create VĂŠttĂr candles made from fine red granite. The surfacedwellers instead focused on farming and domesticating a handful of mighty beasts, although, the heard seldom grew big due to the enormous amount of food one animal could provide them with.

“How old are yĂ© now Stonebeard?”

“Quite old.”

“What will happen when you die?”

“I do not know, but the worldstone will surely turn me into a good gemstone like this here” Stonebeard held up a transparent golden stone (amber) “Surely the worldstone in its magnificence will decide what we all become, as part of its magnificence or to pride it with an eternal shine. See above us the mange glimmering dots. Clearly, we cannot be the first and not the last, up there are those who have been accepted by the worldstone”

Short, stout and likely found in a grey or green coats or grey clothing, the Véttír portrayed many traits found in more humanoid creatures. Not comparable to small children but rather small people. To differentiate tribes and cultures one must take note of their ornamented and differently coloured caps and pottery. To not compliment a Véttír cap when first meeting is an insult not only on the tiny person in front of you, but also his family in extension. They were therefore a species known for their temperament and ways of taking vengeance by mistreating or cursing the person who disrespected them – usually by making the other’s animals sick or causing issues with barns or houses.

They were not magical beings, but they could indeed tap into some magic, usually in the form of lights where finely carved granite could be imbued with light. Whether this could develop or not it is not certain. More likely the species would be known for their skills in making tools to best adapt to their gigantic environment and to survive weather and hostile animals.
