Nuwe Ales is the prophecized son of God, a chosen one from among the Varic people sent to reclaim the holy lands from the mudborn. His victory and establishment of Savitra should have represented an unprecedented triumph and a great symbol of hope for the Urapi people.
Instead, it divided them.
Those in the west, mostly ethnic Tevali, had been the first to hear of Ales, with many of the lowlanders converting to faith before the prophecized son of God had ever been born. Yet in the east the theocrats of the old khans still held sway and cracked down on conversions, and so few of the ethnic Urapi ever converted at all. The theocrats did not deny that Ales was a great and noble man, a hero to the Varic people, but did insist that he was no more divine than any of the rest of the sunborn people.
With the Varic plateau now largely pacified and/or Varicized by Savitra - a government both the Urapi and Tevali recognised as legitimate - many people who had practiced the kharubbal for untold generations no longer had ready targets that they could justify raiding and pillaging, at least along the old ethnic lines of Varic against mudborn.
The kharubbal could not simply disappear, however. It was a fundamental component of the political hierarchy as those that lead the kharubbal gained power, prestige and experience. They were also a functional part of the economy, with the raids bringing home wealth and slaves each and every year.
And so it was that new lines were drawn, this time not Varic against mudborn but instead Alesians against Khanites. The Khanite faithful in the east were initially not interested in raiding to their west, their ancient homeland of Urapivarta within reach, yet still squatted upon by the mudborn. As kharubbal from the Tevali began to arrive in droves and complaints began to mount from the populace, the theocrats were forced to respond in kind if they had any intention whatsoever of retaining their power. And so they began to sponser kharubbal of their own to the west.
Thus began centuries of civil war and strife, the Urapi and Tevali people torn in twain by the victory of Ales, a man they both agreed was a hero to the Varic people.
