How Do Preorders Work?

I was trying to use Afterpay to preorder something on Amazon. I got accepted, got my dates, and it said Iād have to do a down payment today. However nothing was taken out, and the order itself did not show up in my app.
Any insight into this?
Do preorders not take effect until the item comes out?
