Evander was the elder cousin of the heir of the House, but his bastard status had meant he would forever hold a subservient role. He didn't hold it against his cousin, at least that's what he told himself, and they had grown up together. In all honesty, he did like Calvert. He had treated him, a bastard, with respect befitting a family member and was not afraid to be seen with him. However, Calvert's status as the heir of the House and being the son of Lord Bonifer had, in his opinion, cowed the real Calvert. Calvert was content to do what his father had done, not seeing what Harvest Hall could be. And yet, it was Calvert that traveled with Lord Bonifer and Lady Delena to Nightsong.

It was clear to Evander that the growing age of the children, and in a twisted sense the greater involvement of Lord Bonifer because of this, meant that society was pushing them apart. It was only five odd years before when Lord Bonifer had taken Evander to see Nightsong with the rest of the family. It was during the blasted winter, a cruel joke the Carons seemed to repeat again this time, but the fortress and its singing towers were impressive nonetheless. He knew Calvert had no say in this, but it didn't soften the pain any less. Evander had taken to train inside the keep to not allow those feelings to fester, and the training dummy was the one who would have to bear the weight. His father, Ser John Selmy, was in charge in the wake of the rest of the Selmy's trip which also meant Evander had to keep busy to avoid dealing with him. It didn't matter though, as Evander knew his martial prowess would be what would serve Harvest Hall best. Calvert may not agree, but Evander would serve his cousin and his uncle the way Evander knew would do best, even if they couldn't see it.
