I’ve seen a healthy fraction of posts which list their location as “east coast” or “west coast” or similarly very broad geographies. This covers thousands of miles of territory even if you’re only considering the United States. This can apply to other parts of the world/nation too, depending on the size of the geography described.

I’d like to assert this level of filtering is nearly useless for the purposes of this subreddit. If we’re here to meet face to face that means we’re looking for connections in the same city/town or neighboring counties/states 99% of the time. If you’re a jet setter, great for you but unfortunately accommodating the 1% is hurting the rest of us.

I understand the perceived risk to opsec and the nervousness that people new to the lifestyle have. I’ve been there myself. However, I also know there’s no benefit to anonymity to list “east coast” vs New York. Millions of people live in each state and no one posts enough information to be narrowed down and identified. We’re not here to narrow things down by time zone just to talk (see r/OnlineAffairs). We’re here to touch each other and feel what we’ve been missing in our lives face to face. You’re either ready to do that and put some skin in the game or you aren’t and best suited to reply to posts.

I propose posts without a minimum level of geographic specificity should be banned from the subreddit. Greater levels of specificity are, of course, welcome.

I’m open to arguments as to why this shouldn’t be the case in the comments.
