It’s the sharp part of crystal winter, where breath has a shape, and the cold shines like its own invisible blue sun.
This morning feels like one of those days when anything could happen so I am looking for a woman who is a frequent flier — business woman, pilot, flight attendant, military, foreign service.
You have woken to many suns over many cityscapes — known the efficient speedwalk through connecting terminals, the right stance behind the CLEAR anti-privacy machine, the proper way to pick a security line (speed more than length). You have always been full of new evenings and at home in the space between places, at any elevation.
You can slide into polite conversation and know the smattering of local tongues to summon smiles and charm and disarm with your irrepressible energy.
You keep looking forward to the horizon. And you know that despite how much of a 30-minute-at-time delayed purgatory travel can be, there is that moment of freedom, release, promise when the wheels leave the ground or when in the midst of the raucous, harried terminal you choose which portal to stride through.
Flight is that miracle of possibility. That marrying of moment and imagination. That true soaring ecstasy of weightlessness and sheer speed.
I have met you, and you have met me — or some incarnation of ourselves. On the road, in a hotel bar, in adjoining seats, in a sky high conference room, in the same eternal cocktail party going round the world in 80 days.
Tell me your best and worst travel story. Smile and keep a half mask of mystery. Convince me to take the detour to the forest, the desert, that bar you were kissed in once.
Let me buy you a coffee or a glass of some foreign bottled sun, crushed, barreled, loved, gently poured to be savored with slightly curled lips and half closed eyes and a strongly beating heart.
Business woman, road warrior, pilot, flight attendant, military / diplomat sky jockey, pro leisure traveler. Bring your extra passport pages, your kaleidoscope stories, your wry grin, your ever spark of adventure.
Let’s share a moment of well spoken eye contact and tell tales for a little while.
You’re here because you know when you are most alive. I do too.
