Almost a year ago a friend of mine cheated on a woman who was also my friend. They'd been dating just a couple months. It was terrible of him, but it's not worth ruining his life over. At the time I heard from her first-hand what had happened -- he was dishonest, and left her for another friend of his.
Fast forward to today -- we have heard through a mutual friend that she plans on blasting him across social media with sexual assault allegations that I am certain are not true from the conversations I have had with her myself. However I have no physical proof, and it was made clear she plans on going after anyone who defends him--even friends closer to her than I am. Furthermore, she is influential in our community and there is no doubt people will pick sides based on their loyalties. We were even told she is going to try to go after his job.
If I reach out to her about what she told me then I'm confident it will only make her feel attacked and will certainly make things worse. How do I support my friend -- and hopefully even protect his reputation -- without making things worse?
