I want to be a teacher, and just got accepted into the program at my university. I'm taking a summer class where I am shadowing a teacher in the subject I want to teach, and it's great! The teacher is amazing, she has/uses a lot of teaching philosophies that I really admire, and she seems to have a healthy work/life balance even though she loves her job.
But after spending my first week there, I've realized that she's super close with a lot of students. She teaches seniors most of the day, plus it's a small town and this is a 6th-12th school, so she's known many of them for many years. The seniors graduate in two weeks, and I'm feeling bad about taking their teacher from them, even if it's just in the sense that I'm in the room and they can't have private conversations. They really respect her, confide in her, and genuinely ask her advice.
I'm thinking about either reducing my total days, shortening my days, OR bailing altogether and doing the "alternative assignments" we were offered (in accordance with the COVID policies, but most people probably did it because it was simple and much faster to complete).
