How can I check on an online friend?

One of my close friends (whom I only have contact with online) has gone offline for several days. This may not sound like a big deal but they are struggling with depression and Iām really worried for them. About two weeks ago they had a failed attempt and sent me a letter saying goodbye. All I can think is that they succeeded this time. I just need to know, please, how can I find out?
