Hello! There's this new family that started coming to our church a few weeks ago and they have two high school aged sons. A few of the adults asked me and my friends to try and talk to them, because they don't have many friends. Me being friendly, I did, but I don't know if I'm doing it right. Here's what it would look like with the older one:
Me: So, have your classes started already? (I am in uni)
Him: Yeah.
Me: Ooh, so it's back to the old grind, huh? How's it been?
Him: It's been fine. Nothing new.
Me: Haha, I know the feel. Y'know, back then, I used to be really excited when everything started, especially because summer break always kept me bored. I'd be like, "Yes! i must be the perfect student!" but eventually just get lazy again later.
Him: Yeah, haha, same.
Me: Do you have, like, a favorite class?
Him: waits 15 seconds shrugs No. They"re all ok.
At this point I'm feeling uncomfortable because I don't really know where to go. I don't know if he's intimidated because I'm 5/6 years older and I'm a girl. He's like that too with everyone else, and mostly just uses his phone since he isn't talking to anyone.
The younger one is the same, but he hovers around me or my friends like he wants to talk. I'm having a hard time when it's like that, though. Is there anything I can do?
