Not long got a job as a general labourer at a place that I’ve wanted to work at for the past 6 years at a steel fabrication factory, they DONT take apprentices 18 or over which basically more or less made my chances of becoming a welder pretty low. I’ve now got a foot in the door at this place as a general labourer, the manager said if I stuck at it for 5-10 yrs I could be a welder or a fabricator. The slight issue here is A LOT of labourers quit or get fired within a year and it’s a pretty dangerous job (surround by stacks of several ton beams and using roof cranes to constantly move beams around) the pay is good with the basic rate being £12.55ph & weekends, overtime and night shift rates being £17ishph ( I live in a rural area so cost of living is fairly low). My dilemma is I really want to be a welder and more specifically at this place as it’s literally outside my house but I don’t know if it’s worth sticking it out as a labourer for potentially 10yrs with the risk that’s involved and as of now I’m not sure about job security as the longest current serving labourer there is a year. should I just drop it and go college and keep hunting for an a apprenticeship or is this a solid first step to continue on and reach my goal?
