Masters degree program requires 2 references...

So I recently graduated with my B.A. and want to go through the same college to do basically the same degree as an M.A. the requirements include a resume and 2 references but because I'm new to my job I know I'm a long ways away from being able to ask anyone... so my question is how long do I need to wait/ is there other ways to get references other than asking my manager? I don't necessarily want my manager to think me asking for references for this degree means I'm trying to move up because I fear getting let go because I'd in theory have more career options.
