I am 30 years old. When I was in 9th grade I attended a private school that was supposed to be accredited but it was not (story for another time). When I went back to public school in 10th grade, they gave me placement tests to see where I needed to be. I tested into college level for everything. My mom didn’t allow me to do the CLEP tests as she thought I needed the high school experience and I would be too young to be out of high school. The school, my mom, and I all agreed on restarting 9th grade to make sure I got all of my required graduation credits without being overwhelmed with only credited classes (basically wanted a nice balance of extracurriculars/electives as well). In 9th grade in my state (OK), most students would be taking algebra 1, well they placed me in geometry due to my placement scoring. Algebra 2 the next year. Trig after that.
When it came time for my graduation, about a month before we were set to walk, I sat down with the counselor and she told me that I’m missing an algebra credit and it’s required to graduate. They let me walk with my class, but said I should take summer school after for algebra so I can get the last credit and my diploma. Like a dumb kid I just bailed after graduation.
My question is, is there any way to get that last credit and get a diploma? Or should I just get my GED?
If it is possible to do this, where would I even start? State board of Ed? My old high school? The high school in my area now?
I know it was my mistake for not staying after graduation, but it was theirs for not catching it until a month before I’m set to leave HS. I feel like I’m owed an actual diploma (not that a GED is different but still) given I complete this final credit.
Thanks in advance.
