I’ll be starting a new job next week as a lube tech. I have 2 years experience as a lube tech and know brakes, alignments, and mounting and balancing tires. I also went to UTI and I can provide my own tools. I live in CA. The average starting wage for lube techs is $17 an hour but I have seen job postings with ranges of $17/hr-$21/hr. I did discuss with this new job I’d like $18 but he told me they will pay me $17 until they see I’m worth what I asked. Also while speaking to guys at my current job, they told me I should be asking for more due to my experience and because I’m providing my own tools. I’m also set to take the A4-A6 ASE tests next week and I’m sure I’m gonna pass. After all this I feel i should ask for at least $20. With all this how can negotiate wage?
