So far there's been a lot of theorycrafting and speculation about how season 8 will play out. This is all well and good but I'd like to hear about your personal experiences now that the new rules are live. Did you feel like the session was different compared to prior seasons?
[[Mild spoilers for A Day at the Races ahead]]
While the AP and TP system made tallying up sheets at the end of the night easy, we did have to spend a lot of time explaining the rules changes to a chunk of the table. However, I won't hold this against S8 unless it is a consistent problem throughout the season that isn't just associated with the initial confusion following a major rules revision.
There were a couple spots in the adventure that felt odd as a result of the gold changes. Winning the race only to have our gold purse prize disappear into thin air was kind of a letdown. Additionally there was no incentive to steal things when the opportunity came up in play.
The most quality bummer of them all, however, was finding a 1 weapon at the end of it all. I get that this is 2 hour tier 1 adventure, I'm not expecting vorpal swords or anything like that. But upon passing the certificate around so that everyone could get a look at it there was much shrugging and indifference at the table. It just kinda sucks to have your magic item unlock be something that is on the *evergreen* list of always purchasable magic items. I think every single player at the table would be much happier with even just one table A or B consumable.
I hope they find a way to make gold in AL modules less weird and immersion-breaky, and I hope magic item drops that are evergreen items are replaced with something, anything else.
My first impression of season 8 is that the rule changes were unnecessary and do not add to the play experience. All in all though, I still had a blast. I love playing D&D. I will continue to do so and I will continue to DM at my FLGS.]
