wth is syzygy?

I've got a python library for casting charts and one of the default objects it calculates is something called syzygy. I've never heard of this, and google says it's like a conjunction,an alignment of planets, like an eclipse is sun moon and earth syzygy. But if it's a conjunction then why is it a thing with a sign and degree of its own?
Anyone familiar with this?
