I (25F) had an extremely traumatic childhood. My parents were extremely abusive and I cut contact with them years ago. School was also traumatic - my classmates were racist, sexist and homophobic (I’m POC and queer). I was sexually harassed by several of them and by some teachers for years, while other school staff enabled the harassment. I hated the curriculum and thought everything I learned was a useless waste of time. I eventually dropped out, moved, and left everyone behind. I have been going to therapy for several years now to deal with all of these traumas. I’m doing well in my career today, have a very supportive long term partner and many friends (the overwhelming majority of whom I met in adulthood). The problem is that most of my friends are around my age and either still in school or recently done with it - school still features prominently in their discussions and in the way they frame their life. Given my traumatic experiences with it, I would rather not talk about that topic and instead focus on our careers, our hobbies and our relationships. I hate that school still looms so large over us because we are still relatively young. What should I do?
