I am at my first job as an engineer in the US at a multinational industrial manufacturer job. I was shifted to a different division 7 months ago that is completely new to me (have worked for a year and two months at the company). Last month I was asked to travel for work to a different site and document a process along with a colleague and so I did. I did my die fillet eve, although admittedly was late to the site on a couple of days because of traffic (this trip was 5days long). When I came back I took a day off cause o had been traveling and working for two weeks on end. I was brought into my boss and his boss’s office the day I came back and was told that they had received a complain that I did not do my job and spent the whole time I was on the trip on my phone (I had to take notes and pictures of the process and was using my work phone). Both my bosses went on to say that I have not shown any significant results in the last 7 months and don’t have major projects under my belt. They also said that since I had asked for a transfer 6 months into my time there, everyone doubted my commitment. I had asked for the transfer because my old boss (he had a heart attack and has been on sick leave for 3 months) did not manage well at all, I was not given any work or projects except to shadow my colleagues. Back then I had told a colleague this (now my new boss) and had stated this reason for the transfer. The transfer never went through and it seems like “you are not committed to staying here.

Come Friday, I asked my boss’s boss if it was okay for me to go pray my Friday prayers and he said yes hesitantly. I have been going to Friday prayers for all the time I’ve been at the company and have had explicit permission from all of my supervisors. He brought it up again the next week in front of my boss and asked him if he knew this (which he did) just to “keep everyone on the same page”.

Today I sent a calendar reminder to everyone in my department that I will be off at the end of the month. My request was approved by my boss last week and he’s sent me an email asking if even have the vacation approved, it also happens to be the day when I was told that I will start on call duties for a weekend every month and it just so happens that the weekend are Labor Day weekend, thanksgiving weekend, Christmas and new years.

I need advice, what am I doing wrong? How can I mend my relations at my work place? How do I show them that I am dedicated (I am putting in >50 hrs each week).

I might sound a little desperate in this post but an important part of my personality is being non servile and positive. I am confident and and love talking and joking with people.
