Is lubrication on nipple good or bad?

I have noticed that if I put a little oil on my nipples before I pump, it's very comfortable but without it, it is pretty uncomfortable. It feels like it's almost not doing as much when there's oil in them. Can it be that that is the way it should be and I've just been putting up with the pull?... Not really outright pain but uncomfortable.
