Trouble being assertive.

I struggle to be assertive. It's like I freeze up and can't get my head around what to do or say in an emotionally intense moment. Even simple things like deleting a post someone made because it's upsetting to my partner just doesn't come to mind. I get passive and ride things out. And that means I'm not sticking up for my partner, so it's become a real issue.
Has anyone else dealt with this and found a way to grow and change?
