Adoption and social security numbers, how did it work in the early 80s?
Post Body

Recently my mother handed me an envelope she said she found in old stuff. It is a social security card with the same first name, but my mothers maiden name for the last name. And a different social security number than what i have now.

I was surprised to see i basically have two social security cards with two names and two numbers.

Is it normal or was it normal in the early 80's for something like that? Would i have been issued a new card and new number automatically?

I assume i should shred this card, but i also want to keep a hold of it for the uniqueness of it. Stick it in the old memories folder.

Thoughts on all of this?
