Learning Illustrator, and needed some help!

I'm learning illustrator and I understand most of the basics, but am not familiar with interesting ways the tools can lead to shortcuts in design. Especially pathfinder and such tools I think can be used in a lot of ways that I am having a difficult time imagining on my own.
For example can someone give me a quick guide on how to make the image in the link? http://imgur.com/mkCgeTu
I just want to know the fastest way to make the central shapes.
