Idea with this list, from the top. - Hector rex is there to deny GK/TS spellcasting (he also gets 1 to deny), with the SC on bike being a back-up if needed. He's also there to give me a CP through his psychic power, and potentially shut off overwatch for T2 onwards. Statistically, on a Ld 10 against a Ld 8 character he should be able to get me an additional CP from T2 onwards.
SC with the Axe - There to take care of big threats such as Mortarion, PBC, Volkite Dreads, etc through his exploding 6's, and double damage on 6's.
SC with the Bike - there to provide re-rolls for the bike/venetari, and to protect that those two blobs.
2 x 3 Shield guard to guard the back points - would have loved to have an additional 110 pts to make that a 4m squad, but statistically I should be right.
Aquillon Custodians - I LOVE their 3 damage weapon, especially in a meta where people run eradicators/heavy intercessors, and works equally as well against Terminators. Against marines, you'll also want their gauntlets, as statistically they should pummel a 10m regular squad with no invulns to the ground due to their 20 odd attacks.
However there is a contention to change them out to Allarus for the following reasons - as you see, this list doesn't have a lot of storm-bolter fire. Part of me wonders whether stormbolter fire is needed when you have Venetari with superior fire patterns and the salvo launchers of the bikes having two profiles, but I digress. The Allarus can also split, ignore look out sir, and deal with skitarri/admech blobs through their grenade launcher/axe (and being a secondary option for superior fire patterns), as well as having points to give over to make that venetari blob a 6m blob. Of course, that'd make the squad vulnerable to blast, but I don't find enough use with 4-5 units even with exploding 6's. The other reason is that in a DG meta, they could high-roll 3 damage, which becomes 2, which is still better than 1 damage fists from the aquillon. Problem is, I don't like their AP2 axes and spending a CP for AP3, when the aquillons have AP 4 attached to them. Oh, and I'd be wounding on 3's for Deathshroud vs 2's for the Aquillons.
Contemptor-Achillus. There to deal with Volkite dreads mainly, and potentially snipe characters through his adrathic destructors/spear. I fucking hate those Volkite dreads with a passion and they will be the bane of the Custodes existence. He's also a giant threat magnet and a potential runner-up to deal with Mortarion if needed. He'll be starting in deepstrike with the aquills/shield captain.
Venetari - Explanation isn't needed, we all know what they do ;p
Vertus Praetors - alright, hear me out on this one. With the loss of telemon core when our codex drops (thanks the IAC datasheet), I wonder whether these could be our next choice for anti-tank weaponry. Archeotech munitions praetors = awesome way to deal with PBCs, Deathwing, and anything you can possibly think off. Plus they are fast, have obsec, can be transhumaned, and are decent-ish with melee, and even more so, if by T2 they get to the Terminator captain. T6, and 4W ensures they stay alive, although as any good custodian player would tell you, no-one likes making 4 invuln saves. They are also a premier unit to get you engage on all fronts, and deal with PBC's at a distance. I know the telemon right now is a better choice, but with the telemon probably getting the boot when our codex drops, could these be the new best thing?
So thoughts? Picture a competitive scenario with this list.
