How long does it take for track marks to start showing?

I recently lost a friend and the EMT said that she had track marks on her arms. I knew her like the back of my hand and I could never imagine her doing hard drugs let alone shooting up. I am just so sad and angry that I missed all of the signs. I feel like I could have prevented this had I paid more attention. She was my best friend for 14 years. My question is how long does it take for track marks to start forming? I just want to know how long she was approximately already using before she passed away. I feel like I completely failed her!💔💔😢😢
