Update: Butterfly needle

Post Body

This is an update to a previous post, about using a butterfly needle for long term administration of medication.

I bought 10 for 20 bucks. If youre at home and tape it down right it can hold through a lot *if you pick the right veins. That being said I just got a knuckle vein with a 25g 1.5 inch butterfly.

The dose gets pushed very fast it's exilerating, and you can go back to back. They do sometime slip out the vein, but only if you try to cover it with clothes or mess with it. Tape held mine in all day.

If you wanna recreate yourself find a med supply store or buy butterflies online at cascade health, Walmart, or Amazon.

Watch a video to get an idea of how to use it. The basics is you Prep: tie off the limb you intend to infuse into with a tourniquet, standard instructions for sterile injection. Don't forget to give the vein some light flicks or taps to increase its size. Alcohol wipes are important too, wipe in a circle away

  1. hold the needle between two fingers by the wings or just behind them.

2 At the lowest angle you can, advance the needle into vein in one smooth motion, as soon as you're in, you'll see blood flowing in the tubing and the clear flash chamber.

Now advance it gently as far as it will go inside the vein.

  1. Stabilize the wings by pressing them against the skin and taping them in place. You can also tape over the upper needle which is still exposed .

  2. Remove any fittings on leur lock hub. Attach syringe with saline to the lines hub? And pull back on the plunger. Observe a continuous stream of blood that ends up in the syringe.

  3. Push dose gently, there should be no sensation at injection site except slight temp change. If it hurts stop pushing. Don't force plunger just gently guide it down.

  4. Replace syringe with saline flush and flush the line with saline to clear out additional substances.

  5. Cap your port. Alcohol wipe it every injection. It should be flushed at least every 12 hours ideally more, to avoid getting clogged.
