Hey there. I recently had a family member move in with me that has the beginning symptoms of dementia. The main issue I'm having is that this person likes to watch TV all day and night and it's affecting my family's sleep because this person is constantly turning the volume to unbearable levels (this person also is hard of hearing). We keep asking the family member to turn it down, but because of the mental decline, they forget and turn it right back up.
This family member lives in our former dining room that I separated with a thick curtain hanging from the ceiling. Otherwise it's just a long, rectangular room at one end of our house with the rest of the rooms in the middle or opposite side of the house and a long, narrow hallway connecting them.
I'm a complete noob at sound deadening, so even the most basic tips might help me as I have currently done nothing other than install the curtain.
So my ideas so far is to switch the TV position to the wall where it points away from the hallway to the other rooms. Right now it is facing towards that hallway, although not directly. Maybe put a thick blanket under the TV... it sits on a hard wood stand that maybe reflects the sound a lot. Not sure if there is any other simple things I can do than that but let me know if there's anything else because, like I said, complete acoustics noob here.
My other idea is to buy some kind of dividing wall and attach those sound deadening panels to it. Do you think this would lessen the overall volume or is it a waste of time? I'm not looking for complete silence, just enough reduction in volume that it can't be heard when we close our bedroom doors.
We are trying to move to a new house with more room in the future, but for now we are stuck with this situation, so any advice on how to make the volume from this family member's TV reduced would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the to time to read this.
Edit: I also just wanted to mention that the sound is from the TV speakers, not from a fancy sound system, so bass is not a big problem because the TV speakers aren't really capable of producing low frequency sounds.
