I have come into possession of a 15 year old Gibson Hummingbird cherry sunburst and I want to try and restore it. It has been heavily gigged with and has accumulated years of dirt and sweat which can literally be scraped off with a fingernail it is so dense.

Any advice on what kind of cleaner and tool I should use for attempting to clean it up? Not only the body and neck, but even the metal tuners. Is it futile to think it might be possible to return it to the sheen I see on new models in store?

It looks like it is going to take a real effort and some pressure to clean this baby up and I'm worried I might damage what is underneath it all.
