Been wanting to share my experience for so long, but I don't think I was in the right mental state back then. I was working in a ship for a year and just got back home in May. That was my first contract as a seafarer, months before I was dispatched, I weighed 265 lbs as 5'9 and lost 65 lbs for my physical exam. A month through my vacation, I injured my left achilles from playing basketball, and undergone surgery for Percutaneous Tendon Achilles Repair on June 13.
The first weeks of surgery is so depressing from being physically active everyday to being stuck inside your room 24/7 sucks. Added that days before my injury a girl I was talking to liked my best friend and left me. Glad I had the best orthos in my country worked in my surgery and in just 2 weeks let me do PT and had me FWB. I gotta admit, the first weeks of my recovery I was kinda slacking off from exercise, since I was really down back then, but my PTs are so encouraging and supportive that I dont want to disappoint them.
2 months post op, I was removed from my aircast and started weight training on my leg, I was cleared for lifting weights and do some leg workouts. I continued working out and strengthening consistently 5 times a week until now and just two days ago I was able to do some squats and some leg presses weighing 130 lbs. Aside from working out, I walk two days a week with 10k steps but had trouble walking and still limping, experiencing pain in my heel while walking.
I got a job 15 mins walking distance away from me that I started 2 weeks ago. Since then I was walking to and from 5 days a week, but today, for the first time, I am confident to say that I was able to walk properly and no longer feel intense pain! Aside from some cramp here and there on my calf, I can barely feel it now. Before, I have always had some pain on my heel, but now its barely there and can now feel it in my calf.
This made me want to share this good news, that everything is gonna be okay, just continue doing pt and never slack off to your exercise. I'm almost back at my ROM and can at least do 1 to 2 single calf raises unassisted! I tried doing some light jogs back and forth, it still hurts, but I know could be back to normal again by time. I gained some weight and I'm pretty sure if I lost more and become lighter I'd be better than my old self, praying for everyone’s recovery!!
edit: forgot to add, make sure that you are always hydrated and get enough sleep, these might some simple things for us before injury, but for recovering people this is very helpful and can greatly help your recovery!
