I’m not in Accounting. I’m an upset client and would appreciate objective feedback on whether my CPA let me down or not. Please let me know if this is not the best subreddit to discuss my situation.
My situation: I have several siblings and together we own an income producing property which requires CPA to file a K1. This is the only complexity to my taxes and the only reason I use this particular CPA…he does taxes all of my 6 siblings. Otherwise my needs are simple. My CPA usually files an extension. One year he needed a 1099 from me for a very small amount of dividend - like $300. I had moved 3 times in 3 years and I lost the 1099 doc somewhere and had no luck getting it online. Long story short, he didn’t file for me. He didn’t remind me multiple times. He didn’t propose me granting him access to my records directly from the IRS. I learned of that from a casual conversation and I proposed it to him! He handed that task off to a junior accountant who could not complete that task for 6 months. During that time period I emailed him several times saying something to the effect of ‘hey Jon, if tracking down my records from IRS is not your cup of tea then just let me know. I have someone else who can.’ I ended up going to an Endorsed Agent who got my records in 1 day. Due to the delay, I racked up massive penalty and interest. The PI itself was over $200k which is what I might earn in a good year. I’m embarrassed and pissed off. The icing on the cake is he sent me a $1k bill for the work he/ his junior did on that year’s return. He legitimately has pinged me 3 times in past month about that bill - but not once said anything about me racking up P&I. I’m tempted to show up at his office with the check and ask to speak with one of the principals first. The firm is about 30 people with 3 owners. Am I playing the role of victim or should this family practice CPA have warned me about P&I and pestered me about getting him that 1099?
