Hi, all!
As all of us within the academic psychology community know, the public sphere is littered with misinformation (and even blatant disinformation) regarding our beloved field. The popular sphere has done a lot of harm to public perception of our field by disseminating everything from myths about mental illness and therapy to misconceptions about cognition and brain development. In many ways, psychology is a field that most people think they know a lot about, but about which they, in reality, know very little.
To get to the punchline, one of my passions regarding psychology is making good, scientific information more accessible to the public. I want to use my education to not only work within the field, but also to make the field more well-regarded and, in a broad sense, more accurately understood by the average layperson.
One of the ways I want to try and tackle this feat is by creating an online resource containing articles written by knowledgeable folk within the field. These articles would ideally span the gamut of the field, including history & systems and empirical methodology, and would be written in an academic-popular hybrid style. In other words, they would include citations of peer-reviewed literature, but they would be written as if being presented to a college freshman (or high school student) with no background in the field.
I cannot, however, tackle this project alone. My own background is mostly in clinical-personality psychology (as well as good experience with statistics and methods), and since psychology is such a broad field, there are still many subfields about which I have a working, but more limited, understanding. Therefore, I am asking any interested individuals with at least a masters degree in psychology or a related field to join me on my (hopefully) noble endeavor. There is no commitment necessary, nor is there any reward other than whatever satisfaction you may garner from participating. (But who knows? Maybe one day this will be as big as Psychology Today -- a guy can dream!) I am simply asking for folks to contribute original articles, videos, and/or other content to the website. You will be credited as the author of your contributions, and of course all intellectual content will be your own.
Articles can be as short or as long as you want, within reason (and as long as they sufficiently cover the topic in question). If you are interested in learning more, or in helping me by contributing your knowledge to the project, please don't hesitate to comment below or PM me!
Thanks so much in advance!
EDIT: Someone below mentioned a Q&A section, so I thought Iād mention that I had that included in the project already. For any given question, Iād ideally like to forward it to contributors whose knowledge and experience is most helpful for answering it. That way, the questioner could get a handful of answers from those who are most knowledgeable on that particular subject.
EDIT: After some more thought, I wanted to say that "concept introduction" is the best phrase to describe the kind of articles I'm looking for. So, essentially, the articles will be like condensed "For Dummies" writings.
