I want to learn about the orgin of Judaism and its original followers, and what existed before.

I know, not completely biblical, but it seems logical that Christianity arose from Judaism and I want to know what Judaism arose from. I'm not looking to do a complex academic deep dive, but I've read a few Bart Ehrman books and didn't feel overwhelmed with the writing style.
What books do you recommend?
