I've seen some people say the Exodus line "thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk" is referring to a prohibition specifically pointed toward ceasing a magical pagan practice where this was a form of ritual.
It seems like the verse doesn't really necessitate the banning of mixing all meat and dairy, but this has become a Jewish kosher dietary requirement.
Do we know how long this has been the Jewish interpretation of the verse? Did ancient Judaeans eschew the mixing of meat and dairy or is this a later rabbinical interpretation?
