I've had an interest in the Axial Age theory of history for some time. I recently read The Origin and Goal of History by Carl Jaspers, in which he first articulated the theory that all of the major intellectual traditions of the world came to be between 800 and 200 BCE.
He lists Jeremiah and Ezekiel as the intellectual godfathers of Judaism as we know it, which in turn gave rise to Christianity.
What are the best commentaries, either long or short, on Jeremiah and Ezekiel that approach the major prophets from a philosophical or literary perspective. I'm an atheist who was raised fundamentalist Christian. I'm very familiar with the Bible within a literalist context, but I'm interested in exploring it from a more nuanced and critical perspective.
