Armed guards at the border of the Hittite Empire? Egyptian governors lording over Levantine cities? Or was it more of an informal sphere of influence with local kings paying tribute to the Pharaoh?
The intricacies of Bronze Age imperialism are very interesting to me. I'm trying to wrap my head around Egyptian presence in the Levant but the sources I'm reading just describe it as "the Egyptians fought many campaigns in the region" and "the Egyptians were forced to withdraw" without really explaining the realities of the occupation.
I'm sorry if this is too tangential a topic for the subreddit, trying to understand the history of the culture that wrote the Hebrew Bible
