I finished the Manga recently and was quite disappointed with the ending, which made me start thinking about the Manga as a whole.
First, the drop in quality. If you go from the first volumes to the last, basically all of the extremely beautiful and detailed art is gone and replaced with just generic drawings.
Also, the general tone of the series seemed to change from being about Keiichi and Belldandy's romance to just being boring god arc after boring god arc. The final arc was especially drawn out and tedious, and really made me disappointed at the drop in the storytelling capabilities.
The development of Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship also seemed to completely stop after the second volume, in fact I'd argue that it seemed to regress. They moved from liking each other, to kissing, and then just radio silence. I feel like the series could have been cut down to like 15 volumes and skipped most of the battle-centric arcs, and would have made the ending slightly more satisfying.
And the ending overall, spoiler warning. Basically, after the extremely long arc before it, Belldandy and Keiichi get married, in front of only a few people (Urd, Skuld, Hild and Mara) and then that's it. That's it. No epilogue, no big wedding with all of the amazing characters we've seen like Megumi, Otaki, Chiihiro... they don't even kiss or anything! Like I get he wanted to just get the series over and done with, but how was this the solution he chose.
Honestly I could go on. I adore the first parts of the series, and some moments from the later part, but yeah.
