4.11.5 - 4.12.5 Chapter Discussion (Spoilers up To 4.12.5)
Post Body

Let us discuss! Here are prompts for all the chapters read this week. Let these questions inspire your discussion but don't feel limited!

Note that spoiler markings don't appear on mobile, so please use the weekly spoiler topic, which will be posted every Saturday, if you would like to discuss later events.

  1. What are your thoughts about the author's craft (and/or translator's craft) in this chapter? Which line did you enjoy the most and which the least and why did you like/dislike this specific line? Were there any literary devices that stood out to you or descriptions of people, clothing, scenery etc. that were of interest to you?
  2. The first is kind of subtle, but I think we have 2 "strangers" joining the mob in this chapter. The first paragraph tells us "a man of lofty stature, whose hair was turning gray, and whose bold and daring mien was remarked by Courfeyrac" joined up. He is not mentioned again in this chapter. Who is is, and why did Hugo tell us this and quickly move on?
  3. Hugo often reminisces on a Paris that no longer exists and which had already been wiped out and replaced within his own lifetime. Do you have any thoughts about that, either in relation to the way Hugo tells the story or more generally?
  4. Even if they didn't feel like joining, it looks like the action is coming to them. When Lesgle/Laigle/Bossuet was introduced, Hugo characterized him by how unlucky he is. Since that hasn't really come up, do you think that trait will play a role here?
  5. Their goal is to overthrow the government – how are you feeling about their chances, based on this and previous chapters? (And is anyone else worried about them being in charge of establishing a new government? Or just me?)
  6. What do you think of Gavroche coordinating the barricade building effort? Or how about the exchange between Gavroche and Enjolras?
  7. What do you think of the significance of the rebellion? Hugo says the barricades aren't very tall and it only affects a small part of the city. On the other hand, they're passing out bullets now. What level of reaction do you think their activities warrant from the police, army, etc.?
  8. What are your other thoughts?
