1. Why do you think Valjean would be going to England? Do you think he wants to move because he keeps being recognized in France? Assuming Marius's plan is to talk to Valjean, how do you think Valjean will react? (Edit: Last year's discussion mentions Gillenormand as a possibility.)
2. What are your thoughts about the author's craft (and/or translator's craft) in this chapter? Which line did you enjoy the most and which the least and why did you like/dislike this specific line? Were there any literary devices that stood out to you or descriptions of people, clothing, scenery etc. that were of interest to you?
3. Who wrote the address? Who threw the paper?
4. Do you agreed with the idea behind “Marius was at the age when you believe nothing bad about a person, later comes the age when you believe everything. Suspicions are nothing but wrinkles. The first blush of youth had none.”?
5. I found this chapter heartbreaking--the booksellers taking advantage of Mabeuf, the minister not actually helping, Plutarque falling ill. How did you feel about it? (4.9.3)
6. Hugo summarizes what different factions think of revolts/riots. Do you agree with any of them?
7. Hugo seems to have a fairly black and white view about what types of rebellions are acceptable and what aren't. Do you think that he has a clear standard that lets him judge this fairly? Do you think that the examples he gives of good and bad revolts are based on hindsight?
8. Any other thoughts?
