4.1.4 - 4.2.4 Chapter Discussion (Spoilers up To 4.2.4)
Post Body

Let us discuss! Here are prompts for all the chapters read this week. Let these questions inspire your discussion but don't feel limited!

Note that spoiler markings don't appear on mobile, so please use the weekly spoiler topic, which will be posted every Saturday, if you would like to discuss later events.

  1. Every revolution, being a normal outcome, contains within itself its legitimacy, which false revolutionists sometimes dishonor, but which remains even when soiled, which survives even when stained with blood.
    Do you agree?
  2. We get a long chapter on the feeling of the populace who are still looking for change. The list of organizations felt very Monty Python to me. (Did you notice the ABCs reappeared?)
  3. Enjolras reflects on the good qualities of his friends and their ability to speak and convince people well, all except for Grantaire. What do you think of his treatment of Grantaire? Is he being fair at all?
  4. Right now, Marius seems to be working based on ideas. He gives Thénardier money because of the idea that he saved his father. He visits the meadow of the lark because it has the nickname of his beloved, and believes she feels it too. What do you think of Marius, and his current situation in general?
  5. This is quite an action-driven chapter, only to end up with not much happening, but Hugo hints that something is coming in the last line. What do you think of the development of the chapter? Any predictions?
  6. Monsieur Mabeuf reappears, and is more destitute than ever. I can’t help but draw parallels between this man and the Bishop Bienvenu. Both are very old men who love plants, and both play a sort of important figure in shaping important male characters. Both live in poverty, except one does it more willingly than the other. Thoughts?
  7. Eponine appears again in front of Marius. She wants no money. I assume shes just as obsessed with Marius as he is with Cosette. She doesn't even want money for this deed.
  8. Any other thoughts?
