3.7.2- 3.8.4 Chapter Discussion (Spoilers up To 3.8.4)
Post Body

Let us discuss! Here are prompts for all the chapters read this week. Let these questions inspire your discussion but don't feel limited!

Note that spoiler markings don't appear on mobile, so please use the weekly spoiler topic, which will be posted every Saturday, if you would like to discuss later events.

  1. Do you agree that Ignorance leads to Crime/Evil?
  2. At first I thought people were paying Babet to have their teeth pulled but then I realized it's probably the other way around. http://bytesdaily.blogspot.com/2013/02/les-mis-and-teeth.html
  3. What do you think keeps them from being arrested if everyone knows who they are and what they've done?
  4. New chapter - we learned a little about the Patron-Minette gang, but they didn't even factor into the story (yet?). Were you happy to return to Marius or were you hoping to hear a story about Patron-Minette first?
  5. Plenty of hints of story in this chapter. Do you think that the Jondrettes, the girls, the letter, or the coffin will have particular significance?
  6. What are your thoughts about the author's craft (and/or translator's craft) in this chapter? Which line did you enjoy the most and which the least and why did you like/dislike this specific line? Were there any literary devices that stood out to you or descriptions of people, clothing, scenery etc. that were of interest to you?
  7. Although this girl is involved in extracting money from people under falsified claims, she seems genuinely in need. We don't know how desperate Patron Minette members are, but I thought it was implied that some of them enjoy violence and murder beyond what they need to survive. Do you find one situation more sympathetic than the other? Do you think this girl's crimes equate more to Valjean stealing a loaf of bread? Would it have been better or worse if she had done like Fantine and prostituted herself instead of becoming a criminal?
  8. Anything else?
