Getting my feet wet with Les Miz. Recommendations for shorter/abridged versions that aren't kiddie books?

Hello, all. I know I'm not exactly following your reading schedule, and I'm getting my feet wet first reading the Manga before hunting for a text version. I don't honestly think I want to read unabridged, with all the cheesemaking, Waterloo and sewers chapters.
Any recommendations for a decent abridged version? Something that focuses on the story and the characters and leaves all the social commentary, battle tactics and general running-off-at-the-mouth pen on the cutting room floor?
