Order new phones now - don't activate for 2 months?

If I buy 2 new iphones on bogo as a christmas gift for 2 of my kids what issues will I have if any? One would get a new number the other would retain the same phone number. They wouldn't open them or activate the phones until like 12/24-ish. I assume they wouldn't notice any change to their service until we activate the new phones? Any issues with the phones sitting for 2 months before activation? Would auto activation still work? would be charged anything in the interim? Thx - sorry for the all the questions :-)
